Curled gills and opening mouth?

I got my axolotl on thursday, she was active, and eating, but today i got home and her gills are curled forward, and and it looks like she's almost dry reaching? she opens her mouth and gulps in water and spits it back out? Could this be impaction from a very fine sand-like gravel i had that the lady in the pet shop gave me, i was weary of it so ive since taken it out and now the tank is bare bottom. Right now her gills are still forward but she is swimming to the top of the tank and gulping air.
Im very worried, hoping its nothing life threatening! any advice is appreciated!

She seems to have calmed down now, just sitting on the bottom of the tank, gills are back to normal and slightly fluttering as usual, body is straight and tail isnt curled. Gulping has stopped and seems to be in peace for now. If her condition has changed ill update!
