Hi all, I noticed my axolotls gills were curled so I did my research and I found out it could be due to high temperure. There was a heatwave recently and the tank rose to 22 degrees celcius it is now down to 20.

I went to check on him this morning and his gills were perfect but 5 minutes later they were curled again. what does this mean?

Eoin OD, thanks

I would suggest trying to lower it by a couple more degrees (though 20 is within the acceptable range) if possible. It could also be related to high flow. What type of filter are you using?

I am using a fluval U2 but I have a piece of filter foam tied to the outlet to disperse the water flow. But I only put that on yedterday so I will wait and see if it helps.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
