So I did a big water change (maybe about 75%) to lower my nitrates. My ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels have been perfect so far, but after the water change my nitrates read at 0 (as well as ammonia and nitrite). I just left it for 2 days and tested again and now my readings are, ammonia: 0.25 nitrite: 0.25 and nitrate: 10. Did my cycle crash and should I be worried for my axolotl? If it did crash what should I do?? 😫

Just to eliminate the possibility of a faulty test, what are your levels at now? Also, what kind of test kit are you using?

Your numbers are certainly a bit odd. At the very least, I would recommend dosing your water with Seachem Prime and either doing 50-60% water changes every 12 hours or tubbing your axolotl and doing 100% water changes every day.

The levels are the same and I’m using the API kit 😫 But thank you!! I will try that

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
