Cynops Orientalis in England

Does anybody know of a store that sells these animals in england?

At certain times of the year the pets shops here are full of them, however I have yet to see a pet shop bought Cynops that is healthy.
From this area of the country at least, almost all die within a month of getting them home from the pet shop.

IME, you're more likely to find them in larger fish shops that in pet shops.

There were some in Jolly's just by me (Milton Keynes) about a year ago.. they never had them again.

They were there one day... and i was oh so tempted but went back and they were gone.

That seems to be thing with pet shops and aquarium stores is that most of them have sold C. Orientalis for a period of time and then stopped, here are some excuses:
1. Nobody bought the newts
2. The newts escaped
3. The newts died of over heating
4. The newts were eaten by agresive tank mates that shouldn't have been there in the first place.
5. The newts were "frail and delicate" creatures that died with in days of ariving at the store or of their purchase by somebody who probably kept them in a tropical fish tank. This was probably due to either high temperatures or shipping stress.

Hehe, you guys in Britain differentiate pet shops from fish shops?
Fish shop sounds like something you go into for dinner

. Many of what I call pet shops only have fish and related species.

i have noticed that most of the pet stores around me (pittsburgh pa) have stopped carrying C.o. for the reasons ben listed. only a few of the smaller places have they sporaticaly, and i havnt seen them in any of the big chain stores in a long time.

Well it depends, there are so called aquatics specialists who sell usually fish and garden pond stuff, and there are the pet stores that sell mostly small mammals and a few reptiles. Amphibians will pop in both on occasion because they appeal to both fish people and reptile people. Very often the two stores will be combined or housed in the same complex, a garden center. Garden centers are pretty much an english thing I have not found them in America or any other european country. Big buildings in the middle of no where with a plant shop, pets, aquatics, ponds, swimming pools, groceries, and even food.

I guess those kinds of things are for countries with a lot of people in them eh? Here we basically just have one pet shop carrying most of this stuff, sometimes they have reptiles, sometimes amphibians but always fish. If they are not specialized on fish they usually sell some mammals and birds too.

Let me change my question a little bit, does any body know of a store (pet or fish) in the surrey/london area that currently has Cynops orientalis or falsely labled Cynops pyhrogaster currently in stock? There are a lot of stores in this area so there's bound to be at least one that sells them. Also when a bought my original newts they were very healthy and were probably captive bred.

hey ben there are two places that may be of interest to you. well three i can think of. 1st is a place called badshot lea garden centre. 01252 333666. they mostly sell fish but ask and they can order you stuff. they are located near farnham/aldershot. the next place is ashford aquatics. the number is 01784 463830. they are right next door to heathrow airport. if you call them ask to speak to someone about amphibians-coz this number is for the fish part. i have asked them if they have any herps instor they say no-i go there and they have loads. they are damn cheap. i got some cynops for £4 each. nice!they can normally order lots of stuff. the last is crystal palace reptiles. www.crystalpalacereptiles.com. been there once but they can get stuff. also www.southcoastexotics.com they kinda run an import service. one of the main importers. located in portsmouth though. hope that helps any more info just ask. mark

Thanks mark, I know where ashford aquatics is, last time a went they were selling axolotls and had about 50 large Pleurodeles Watl that they were caring for for one person. I got one Cynops orientalis today, at a store but I want more, I now have two males and need some females.

i think i am going to get some tommorow. i am getting some of a girl at my college, who has got bored of them!! and she is doing a course in animal care. the dappy cow brought them in on a day that she knew i wasn't going to be in on. then she left them in the 'exotics room' . oh well i hope they are still alive when i get there 2moz.!
