Death via amplexus

Has anyone ever seen salamanders kill each other through amplexus? I could have SWORN the female was dead. Her mouth was open and it looked like when they are dead and their mouth seems inverted. I separated them and she swam away like she was just on her way to the mall for a new pair of sneakers with not a worry in the world.

I already typed out a response in pm, but... Dang! Is that the "female" I gave you? I must admit she looks a little bit like a dude

ETA:

I've never had anyone die during amplexus, but the females do look like they're being strangled to death. Just like you described: eyes popping out, tongue bulging. Sometimes I get worried and pry the male off and she'll be just fine. I give my ladies a break from the dudes about every other week or so - just set up a small tank nearby that the males go in to cool off.

At one point I was SURE I had a male and a female...I just looked at them again and now I'm not so sure, although the one is WAY more manly than the other....we'll find out if eggs appear, I suppose.

On the plus side, they look great! You might think about separating them, at least until the little guy becomes just as manly.

Perhaps you have discovered a new subspecies of Incubus/Succubus salamanders?
