Hi all,
Well I'm now the proud owner (parent) of a second Axolotl. He's a little Juvie so can't really sex yet but for some reason has the aura of a scamp so we've given him a male name.
We were going to go along the line of very plain British names to fit with "Fred" but my GF started calling him Barney on the Flintstones theme and it kind of stuck.
So I guess the two little fellas are now destined to be friends:
OK so he's about 3-4 inches long and is a wild type. No strange genetics from what i can see, he has shiny pigments, speckly skin, first set of limbs (all toes seam intact and all 6 gills, although centre left a little shorter than right). I suspect he's an absolutley normal wild type, exactly what I wanted.
I bought him from the aquatic shop that Fred originally came from, yesterday, as i had a call to say they had new stock. A very overcrowded tank full of very panicy axolotls so I'm glad he had a short spell there.
I've got him in the 60l tank Fred used to be in, which to this little fella is giant. Obviously he needed his own personality and aquascape so he's got his own little shipwreck to hide in and lots of grass and plants to play on.
To make things interesting I've piled up some small rocks (and will be piling up more) and also have 6 moss balls in the tank. These were in the tank before, I was using it to see if they would grow but Barney appears to like them, he moves them around and stands on them so I think I'll be getting Fred some (or giving him the larger). Just got to remember to leave the curtains open so they get some light.
He's already eaten, as was pretty tiny across the belly. Gave him a whole bloodworm cube and ate ever little bit.
Fred is interested in whats going on, and to make sure he didnt feel left out he had a full tank clean yesterday and i gave him a whole extra, extra-long worm. Usually he would have played with it for a while but he ate all 6-7 pieces before hitting the bottom of the tank. I can only assume showing off.
Its quite amazing the size difference, and can see why they couldn't be kept together. I've seen worms bigger than Barney.
Anyhow that's the background and now here are the pics.

As I'm sure you'd expect, I'll keep you updated with Barney's life over the next weeks, months and years
(and I'm sure they'll be times I need your advice on making sure he's got the best possible life)
