Yesterday I changed the water for my Axie's tank, but stupid me cleaned his decorations with dish soap, and some of it obviously didn't wash off. Today I noticed the bubbles in his tank, so I did a complete rinse with vinegar of the entire tank, decor, filter, and then I ditched the sand. He was a little stressed when I put him back in the tank after all of that, but a couple hours later I noticed that his gills were this weird purple shade, and upon closer look, he was peeling. :(
Is this just a temporary issue from stress and stripped bacteria from the soap, or is this some other issue? It doesn't look like fungus to me, but I want to make sure.

Did you rinse everything off really well? In general, you don't ever want to be in contact with soap or anything else that has chemicals in it before you touch or wash anything in your tank. For example, I never use soap to wash my hands before putting them in the tank, because those chemicals will linger on my hands. So it's very likely that he's experiencing skin irritation due to the products that have come into contact with his environment.

Secondly, because you rinsed everything with soap and then vinegar, you've essentially nuked your bacterial cycle. This means it's going to take time for your aquarium to build up its host of beneficial bacteria to process ammonia to nitrite, and nitrite into nitrate. So you need to be very, very careful with your axolotl because a build up of ammonia will only cause further skin irritation and problems. Another note-- if you're rinsing anything from decorations to your filter media, use ONLY used tank water or dechlorinated water. The minerals and chemicals in tap water will kill your bacteria and will cause your cycle to crash.

If it were me, I would find a nice-sized tub to put him in while your aquarium cycles again. It's just easier on both the axolotl and you. If you do daily changes on the tub your axie is in, you won't have to worry about his health as much as you would if you were to have him in the tank while its cycling. Do you know how to properly cycle your aquarium? Do you have a test kit?

Hope this helps! Good luck!

I put him in this tub that I use for his water changes. I do not know where to go from here, but his condition has improved since yesterday. His gills are going back to pink and his eyes are better. His feet and tail are less veiny, but I'm not sure if he's been eating.

Sounds like he's doing better. Axolotls are quite happy in large tubs so don't worry about him being in there. We have 2 in a tub each whilst we make a divider for our tank (third axie is vicious). Just change the water in the tub regularly, keep him cool enough and just keep offering him food. Live earthworms will live for a few days in the water so feel free to leave some in there with him.
You do need a water testing kit, the API advanced one is the best as it's a liquid testing kit and is more accurate than the strips - if you don't have it then invest ASAP as your tank will have crashed due to effectively blitzing it super clean. You'll have no bacteria left so your cycle will start again. It's best whilst he has poorly skin to keep him out as any harsh water conditions like high ammonia will make him a lot worse. Test the water daily to see how you need to adjust it whilst it cycles for 6 weeks.

I got dechlorinator and added that to the tank and a very small amount to his tub of water. I will be changing it daily and cycling his tank. I'm worried about him not eating. He has greatly improved, and I'm just telling myself that if he didn't die when all those changes happened, then he will be fine as long as I keep this up :) I only have ammonia test strips, so I will get a kit. Thank you so much!
