Both term can also be used to describe the timming of a recurring event such as a plant that opent its leaves every morning etc.

The time span during a 24-hour day that animals display their greatest activity can be described by adjectives defining three separate photoperiods:
Diurnal – most active during daylight hours
Nocturnal – most active at night during darkness (most caudates are nocturnal)
Crepuscular – most active during twilight hours at dawn and dusk
The term 'activity' within this context refers to natural or normal functions and may include: movement, feeding, hunting, migration, breeding, nest building, etc.

I've never seen these defined this way - but I think this is what the terms really mean. Glad you concur.
