Diurnal terrestrial caudates?

I think that a lot of salamanders are diurnal so I would suggest trying to narrow down which terrestrial species you would like to keep first, and then figuring out if they are diurnal or not. 
In my experience, rough skinned newts, California newts, and tiger salamanders (along with many other ambystomatidae, I'm sure) are very active and full of personality during the daytime. Tigers like to burrow so there's a good chance you might find them hiding most of the time.. So
I would suggest adding an above ground hide if you're thinking of keeping one so that you can still see it during the day! My rough skinned newt tends to like the water more so I keep her in a mostly aquatic setup but you can keep them mostly terrestrial just fine. Anyway, I hope that helps and I hope your salamander search goes well!
Edit: I forgot to mention that rough skinned newts (Taricha granulosa) and California newts (T. torosa) aren't usually readily available CB
