Dividers, anyone?

Has anyone ever, in the presence of two different newt species but the absence of convenient space, housed them in the same tank with a handy divider placed midway to prevent unpleasant encounters? Would this work if the divider was of sufficient size and the newts of similar habits? If so, is there a minimum tank size this would work with? Are there any other hazards worth noting?

I tried one of the dividers they sell in pet shops. I was trying to keep an overzealous male away from the females temporarily. Within a day he had figured out how to climb over it. I couldn't figure out a way to prevent this, as there is a gap at the top between the divider and the tank lid.
