Hello all,

I have two small axolotls in a tank. The aquarium is not totally covered, but very close to being completely covered. Should I worry about them possibly jumping and landing on the floor, or do they not do this?

They can sometimes leap out of the water. You could just fill the tank a couple of inches short of being full so they can't get out of there.

Id invest in a proper lid or use some duct tape to patch any holes. They can accidentally launch themselves out of the water and sustain pretty bad injuries,

Get a lid or cover the tank. I have lost a couple of axolotls who have jumped out of open topped tanks. Even a tank with a water level several inches below the rim is no guarantee of the axolotl staying in the tank.

Uh I don't think duct tape is a good idea...we've had some axies survive after jumping out of the tank but i've never heard of any surviving after getting stuck to duct tape! I guess if you use two pieces and make sure whatever piece is facing the water not sticky? I'm sure I just misunderstood your post but please make sure they can't stick themselves to the duct tape :)

I'd suggest taping some mesh or a towel to the part that isn't covered maybe?

I thought it might be obvious but apparently not. Yes i meant sticky side up , not facing the water. Thanks

You can get for about $20 or so enough material to make screen covers for a bunch of tanks. I recently got several tanks for different critters and am doing just that, but if you only have 1 tank, they also sell pre-made window screens that you can cut up to the size of your tank. If you have something like a glass lid or some other lid that has holes, you could use window screen material and tape it or hot glue it onto the lid to cover the holes and gaps.

Definitely invest in a cover of some kind and make sure it has no gaps and is weighed down. I had a lotl jump and to push his way out of the plastic tank lid, landing on the floor. Major stress, but he's fine now!

My daughters axi jumped out and landed on the outside ledge of an open window...jet propelledFine now by the way!
