I've been fish keeping for a while(about 7-8 years, but it's been in the last few years I got really interested. Especially this year, considering I have my first ever axolotl! With my first axolotl, I also had
-My first sand substrate tank(my dad and I always used gravel)
-My first live plants
-and my first real driftwood!

It's been a fun adventure, learning various things. But, my driftwood starting growing this soft, clearish cloudyish moss stuff? It's really weird, and grips to the wood. I just took out the piece and ripped the plant life from the bark. What is it? It was tough under water, but my rag and hot water seemed to demolish it. Is this plant stuff harmful? I hope not... My axolotl and I both like the driftwood! :)

(Just put this in Axolotl General, since I know a lot of people have live stuff in their lotl tanks!)

I am going through the same as you, from my research its harmless and will go away on its own.

It sounds like fungus. It basically consumes decaying matter, which is why it tends to turn up on driftwood.
When I took out the driftwood to clean it after a week of it being on there, the sections with the mystery growth didn't feel any different than the unafflicted areas. Does decay take longer to notice?

Pictures would be ideal

Here is the best pictures I could get of the algae on my driftwood. I have had the wood for about 3 months. There is a cherry chrimp in a few of these pictures:)

How new is the drift wood? Why is this setting off memories from when I first started with drift wood..... I'm thinking it may be normal if it's new?

Pretty sure you can scrub it off. It may come back but will eventually go away.

My driftwood growth looks like that, but it's more growing out and becoming like a blob. I can't get pictures of it myself cause I'm out of state currently

Oh, and my wood has been in there since late September, and Tabi was added in there October 3rd. It was wood I found myself, but I made sure it was a hard wood so it wouldn't rot so easily, froze it, boiled it, water logged it for a month(I found it in August), boiled it twice for an hour each, then set it in my tank(because there were no animals to worry about temp changes from boiling wood)
