Hello.

I am looking for a replacement for a duetto 100 cartridge filter. I keep my 30+ yr old Cynops ensicauda popei (gold dust newt) in a 20 gal tank w/about 7 gal of water in it. Does anyone know if the fluval U1 filter would work in this amount of water? I didn't think I'd ever have to worry about replacing the duetto...didn't know newts could live this long :) but the duetto has apparently been discontinued and while the filter is still working very well I know that eventually I'll run out of media replacements. Would the fluval work?

Thanks!

For a tank that small, you really need a small filter, and one that doesn't make much current.

I would suggest looking at the Tetra 10i internal waterfall filter. The pads are much easier to replace than they are for a submersible, and it produces less heat in the water. There's an even smaller model, the 2i, but it requires an air pump. If you are willing to use an air pump, you could probably get away without any filter for the tank, or just an old fashioned box filter. See: http://www.caudata.org/cc/articles/filters.shtml

Thanks Jennewt for the suggestion but I was really looking for something similar to the submersible canister filter (duetto). The newt spends most of his time hiding under rocks but seems to like a gentle creek-like movement of running water. W/the duetto I could adjust the rate of flow and it really worked so well! I never noticed that the water heated up w/the filter. He's been living in the same tank for 30 yrs and w/a duetto for a large part of that time w/no ill affects. I just don't want to change anything. Do you know if the fluval would be similar?
