Hey everyone.

My kaiser newts have had swollen cloaca lately. 2.1 group apparently. I cooled the aquarium by just 5 degrees and i'm getting tail fanning!

Cloacas are getting bigger, female's starting to elongate. Coming into full condition.

I'm fairly sure i'll get eggs soon. Of course can never be sure 100%. Hopefully i'll get eggs!:D:D

I just saw a spermatophore a couple hours ago!!!! I think the female took it up! I'm gonna get eggs!

A 5 degree temp drop did this. I don't think anyone would've expected that!

Congratulations, keep us posted on any progress!

aaahh..exciting! Out of curiosity, what is your temp before and after the drop? What kind of setup? Do you have any current or more of a pond-type tank?

I keep them in a 20 gallon "tall" fully aquatic with a styrofoam land section. It satys around 75F. I dropped it to 69-70F and it induced breeding behavior, along with a shorter day cycle.

I watched them last night and the male attempted fanning again. But stupid me went back there too much and probably discouraged them. Tonight i'm not even going to look and let nature do what it wants.

:D

I just observed my smaller male tail fanning my female. This is after I put 2 frozen water bottles in. Last night I also added spring water with crushed shells to make the water harder.

The female appeared receptive to the male. Her cloaca has become very long and strikingly cone like! With luck i'll have eggs soon.

I saw more tail fanning yesterday. That hadn't done it for several days, but yesterday a weather front came through and they did it the longest i've ever seen. (I don't stick around once I see them fan.) My female is becoming a bit plump too....cloaca is getting longer.

Dont worry about sticking around when they start tail fanning, they are not as shy as you think, mine are in my living room and the male will come to the front of the tank and tail fan his own reflection, once they are in full breednig mode there is no stopping them! Good luck!

Good for you, I moved mine to a terrestrial setup about a month ago, we've had about a 10 degree temp drop, some of them are gaining weight but I've seen no enlargement of cloacas yet :\

How are yours doing now?
