Elodea questions

should i keep my elodea planted or let it float because i want to block out as much light as possible for my mudpuppy

You can let your elodea float. It doesn't really matter to much. I have all of my elodea in my CO tank floating and its doing just fine.

I'd say try some both ways and see what works. If you have plenty of hides, that should provide enough shade for the animal.
