Hello everyone, I was doing dishes when my three year old brother snuck into my room about an hour ago and emptied an entire container of aqueon color enhancing betta food pellets into the tank along with other objects. I'm certain they my juvenile axolotls ingested a decent amount of these pellets since their bellies are all swollen and full now..

I quickly removed them from the tank and into my other axolotl tank where they are now recuperating from the traumatic experience. I'm extremely worried that the pellets may be toxic or could make them sick. any advice or knowledge on the matter would be extremely helpful. I am very worried and hope that my little guys will be okay.

First 20 ingredients in the Betta pellets ( in order )

whole fish meat ( herring and other mixed fish )
whole wheat flour
soybean meal
shrimp meal
wheat germ
corn gluten meal
fish oil
squid meal
garlic
astaxanthin
dicalcium phosphate
dried yeast
choline chloride
calcium propionate ( a preservative )
L-ascorbyl-2-pholyphosphate ( source of vitamin C )
vitamin A acetate
cholecalciferol ( source of vitamin D3 )
riboflavin supplement
vitamin B12 supplement
niacin

I think you'll be fine. I have fed my animals (not axies) fish flakes at times.

They'll be fine. The only possible problem would be if they gulped a lot of hard pellets that could swell up in their bellies. That probably won't happen but if it does just back off on feeding a couple days and keep an eye on them.

Unfortunately it is quite common for young children to put things into tanks. I hope that your axolotls pass the food and that everything returns to normal quickly.
Best of luck and please keep us posted on your progress.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
