Characteristically large-headed "cannibal type":

I would agree Tim, these guys swallow the others head first ...Nice to see the balancers too.

I plead guilty...to overfeeding in the 1st degree!

You really should feed them something else then cheeseburgers Tim !

Hehe...well, I started with around 15 and I still have around 15, with no cannibalism occurring even though this species has a reputation for it. The trick has been to keep a constant supply of alternative food available.

I'm about to get my first morph, and what an impressive beast it is

Beautiful little thing...are you releasing these guys back into their habitat?
Chris

Chris, I do know the locality on Hokkaido Island where they came from, which is Abashiri. But no, I'll be keeping them and hopefully breeding them in the future. I'm very fond of this species. I have a female raised from an egg that became gravid this year, so I hope to have my first breeding next season.

They have turned into some really quite stunning morphs with varying degrees of goldish coloration:

A month later and they still retain the gold coloration:

Hello Tim!
What are the measurements of these metamorphs? What sort of setup do you use for Hynobius larvae and metamorphed individuals? Lovely specimens I must add!
Terry

p.s. I saw your reply in Henk's Thread. Thanks for the photo of the setup Tim!
p.p.s Talking about threads: my thread about my dobrogicus must be moved somewhere because I wanted to update it and the thread is nowhere to be seen.

Hi Terry. Sorry but I never noticed your post until now. Here they are as of today in their setup:

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
