Fake VS. Real

2-4 watts per gallon. The taller the tank is the more you wanna lean towards the 4 watts per gallon.

You could accomplish this by using multiple fluorescent fixtures.

Power Compacts work better but are costly.

Metal Halides work best but are costly and over kill!!!!!

I would do a DIY fixture and utilize the screw in power saver power compacts.

I have done tons of them and they work out great. Just get a dual incandescent socket. You can find them dirt cheap, even at some dollar stores. Gut out a light fixture and splice the wires from the power cord to the socket. The ones I like to use mount to the fixture via the switch as I shown. I just melted a hole into the fixture where you want it mounted with a soldering iron. If you have the room and wish to add more light/wattage you can use as many of these sockets as you wish.

These power saver bulbs produce a good amount of wattage while reducing the amount of heat and energy used,... and it is a quick and dirt cheap way to get you to where you wanna be in a planted tank.
