I was having lunch just a few days ago with a group of people and the subject of newts came up. One of the folks (from the UK--though he'd spent most of his adult life in Asia and Africa so no telling what his colonial/ex-pat language experience was like) said that the only reference or saying he was familiar with was: "Pissed as a newt" (in this context, "pissed" meaning "drunk"). That got me thinking: is anyone familiar with other jargon, sayings or cultural references to newts?

as to your question, yes that expression is english -but in Douglas Adams book 'the Resturant at the End of the Universe" he americanises the expression to 'as drunk as a newt'
