Is my firebelly fat or gravid? I have another that is a perfect size. The newt in the photo was pretty plump when I first brought it home a week ago.

I can't tell anything from the first photo. The second photo looks more like it's gravid, but it's really hard to tell there either. Have you seen the comparison photos here:
Caudata Culture Articles: Bloat

The shape of the belly hints to gravid but it´s a fairly small belly. When they are full of eggs they get much bigger. Feed it well and maintain optimal conditions and you´ll see her balloon up.

Thanks for the input. The pictures aren't great, and yes I've seen the gravid-bloat comparison. If she(?) is gravid, she hasn't been gravid for long because when I picked them up from the shop she just looked plump. Her(?) skin doesn't appear shiny when she's basked for a little bit, and both newts are quite active and eat regularly. How often is it that a wild-caught firebelly is gravid when taken from the shop?

It´s quite common as they are collected in breeding season which is when they are the most visible. Typically the breeding urge is inhibited during the process until stress levels drop and the egg production resumes.

A little bit after feeding, today.
