We used to put feeder fish in with our Axolotl when we went on vacation so she would have something to eat. This worked great a few times until we got a particularly aggressive minnow and now she just hides from fish rather than eating them. Same story with ghost shrimp: they bugged her while eating one day and she refused food for a week. So she is now alone in her tank.
I breed guppies to allow my axos to hunt when they choose. I also use cherry and ghost shrimp after they get quarantined. YOu can use white cloud mountain minnows after quarantine as well.
Quarantine is 30 days to watch for parasites and illness.

I want to introduce white clouds to my tank when I go on long vacations so that my axolotl could have a source of food. Would this be a good idea? I have cherry shrimp but it's hard to tell if my axolotl eats them or they're hiding.
Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation
Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
