My juvenile axolotl is growing like crazy. Took a little while to get him eating when I first got him, but now he eats like a beast. He is about 3.5 inches long right now. I try to keep his diet varied, and already he is pretty picky. He loves frozen bloodworms, and I give those not as his main staple food, but when he just won't eat anything else. I went to my local reptile/amphibian/fish store today and purchased some large brine shrimp to give him a little variety. He did like those, but they're more for a treat. I meant to purchase dillies, baby nightcrawlers, but was given red wigglers instead and when I asked for dillies, they had none. I have been blanching the red wigglers because sometimes, he will spit them out. He usually eats 1 red wiggler per day, but is fed twice per day due to his smaller size and because he is constantly begging for more. I usually give him some bloodworms on the second feeding. However, they are messy. He loves them but I don't. Cleaning up after a feeding is so much easier if he happens to spit out a piece of a whole worm, as opposed to tiny bloodworms floating about everywhere. I wanted to order blackworms online, however they are kind of pricey including shipping, and my daughter might freak out if she saw those gross things in the fridge. My LFS carries black solider fly larvae. I had never heard of these so passed them up, but did a little research online and they seem fine. There isn't a ton of information about feeding them to axolotls though, especially with his small size. I plan on feeding earthworms as a staple, but the only earthworms my LFS has are gigantic, and too thick to even cut into pieces for him. Does anyone have any experience with these larvae and feeding them to their axolotl? Do they have a hard exterior? Risk of impaction?
