Hi, I see people talking about feeding tongs. Is there anything in particular that is better to use?? I guess plastic would be good? I would love any help.

Thanks
Claire

We either drop the food in (live earthworms) and let them hunt; or when we have fed meat used a bamboo/kebab skewer = just angle it and let them grab the meat of it.

Others have improvised and used any sort of tweezers or food tongs available (plastic or metal) - which can be bought quite cheaply at Pricebusters/$2 shop.

I tend to use chopsticks. If you aren't proficient enough in chopstick using, there are kiddie ones available that are spring-loaded, making them really easy to pick up things like worms and dangle them around without dropping them.

thanks, I do like the idea of chopsticks even better than tongs, I have got some so will give it a go. I am pleased to say that even in a day or two they seem to have realised where the food will be at feeding time.

I use a plastic claw(kids toy).... bad experience when i first got my axies is the metal tweezer things. One grabbed the food so fast and tight that she ended up with the tweezer poking out throught her cheek.... she was fine, had vet check her out, never used it again....

They make special metal tweezer tongs for use in feeding, they have rounded ends so what happened to your axie can't happen.

I have a pair but I don't use them in feeding my FB Toads (crickets are way to fast and jumpy), but I use them for general cleaning and tank maintenance and they come in really handy.

my tongs were the special ones...... my baby has a good suck n grip. so it did happen

plastic cooking tongs

thanks for all the suggestions, for now I have a good long pair of plastic cooking tongs that have a good grip at the end.

you could always just use your fingers, although i still jump when they grab their food . If i'm feeding bloodworm either live or frozen I suck it up into the turkey baster and I find my axolotls will suck it out of the end as it falls out, just like a babys bottle really. They just started doing this themselves and any bloodworm they miss tends to settle in one spot as it falls from the baster, although the axies soon make sure its scattered .
