hey i have an axolotl housed with a tadpole, the tadpole has its to back legs and small front legs, its still round, no frog like edges yet..anyways there the same size for now and they are just temporary tankmates. I feed my axi bloodworms, brineshrimp, pellets and i feed my tadpole bloodworms, brineshrimp.He tries to swallow the bloodworms, but he just chews and sucks all the red juice from them, the brine shrimp he eats but i feel like he is deprived. He has spots on his body everywhere and on his transparent tail. I need to know what to feed him and how..he isnt too inteligent...thanx
 
There are tadpole pellets on the market. You can also try cut up pieces of earthworm. The tadpoles I used to have in my pool would eat live insects.
 
Tadpoles do not normally eat meat. Their main diet is algea and they eat it fast so check up on them every now and then.
 
Whilst it's true that they eat mostly algae and such, they'll also nibble on worms and even dead tadpoles if left to do so. I've even seen them eating bacon.
 
Yes, when given a short food supply some will become cannibalistic when others die.
 
While most tadpoles do eat algae I believe that there are some species that eat a more carnivorous diet. I believe the Hymenochirus sps. or African Dwarf Frogs have carnivorous tadpoles.
 
Daniel, i've raised American bullfrog tadpoles on algae wafers...these are foods used for feeding catfish and other bottom dwellers. They can be found in your local fish store with luck.

Cameron, they don't just do this when food is in short supply...my ponds have lots of algae in them and i also use fish food flakes ground into powder to feed them, they'' still eat meat if given the chance...there a good source of nutrients that they wont pass up.

I've bred Xenopus Leavis before and to feed those i used liquidized peas and water. Once the mixture is put in the water it turns the water a very unhealthy green colour...you can't see the tadpoles at all! After a few hours though the water is clear again as they filter feed...this was the only species that i've found not to take meat if offered.
 
That's why I said when others die. In most cases, because they don't really attack each other.
 
They don't attack each other but out of the thousands of tadpoles in a pond loads die naturally and these are always eaten, aswell as any worms and such that will fall into the pond.
 
With all the algae in my pool, the tadpoles always chose the insects otherwise I'm sure the pool would have been algae-free. My African-clawed tadpole was carnivorous..still is and she's almost a year old.
 
African clawed Toad tadpoles filter feed the suspended particles from the water...it's impossible for them to eat any other way as far as i'm aware. Are you positive of what you have? Any pictures?

Sorry, no pics...I'm not good with that stuff. But, yes, positive he is an African Clawed frog. I was given a book with him which said to feed him the granules (which did suspend in the water) they gave me and then pieces of meat (beef, I believe) if I ran out before he morphed. I misplaced the book during the move and have not been able to find it.
 
How can meat be suspended in water? also, when i bred Xenopus toads i found the tadpoles developed and morph really fast. Your saying your Xenopus has remained a tadpole for a year?
 
No, the food they gave was enough until her legs started sprouting (like Daniel's in the original post) that was when Meat was given. She stayed at the bottom of the tank most of the time and was able to eat from the bottom. I got her as a tadpole in March 2006 and about 2 months later she had fully morphed. The rate it takes them to morph depends on the temperature of the tank. Right now she is the size of a half dollar and eats pellets, bloodworms, and small fish.
 
Ahhh....i see, that makes more sense!
I was talking about Xenopus tadpoles originally. They only eat suspended plant matter until they morph...then they start to eat insects,worms etc.
