Female axolotl with strange blood vessel growth in gills...?

For a while now I've noticed that my female axolotl Wooper has very strange gills. The vessels that go to and from her gills have been growing outside, like one of the frills. I attached pictures of her gills along with a quick drawing of what they look like (left) compared to normal gills (right). Does anyone know why this happened, or if it could lead to potential problems?


She's got a few grains of sand on her 'cause we just moved her and her tankmate into a new aquarium.

If this is the same thing as your axxie has, it's apparently nothing to worry about. Dark Maverick is quoted in this board as saying that 'gill loops' forming outside of the gills is quite common and, thankfully, completely harmless (and if I remember correctly, Dark Maverick is a vet). So that's reassuring!

My axi has the same type of gill growths every once in a while. The I asked the breeder (Michael Shrom) and he told be it's nothing to be worried about. They come and go every once in a while, the first time I saw one I freaked out too.
