I saw one of my female alpine newts tail-fanning toward a male last night. It was a bit tentative but definitely tail fanning.

What's that all about? Is the lady a bit confused, or is she trying to give him some lessons on how to do it?!

ahahahaa , most of the time when i feed them and they are all excited my female do the same and the juveniles to, but in a different way compared to mature male.
Guess is some sort of comunication.

I´ve seen it happen in a few species and i think it´s a way of expressing mild territorialism. It´s most commonly seen when feeding which is when animals get closer and spirits are higher. To avoid being bitten, some animals display this modified version of tail-fanning. In all cases i´ve seen, it´s always different than reproductive tail-fanning.
