Hiya. I have 4 axolotls and last year I had issues with lack or very small filaments. Since setting up my new tank, again last year, my one has improved massively but my wild type has remained unchanged and my other one seems to have gotten worse. Any advice as to why one would improve but the others wouldn't and what I could do to help them!
I have tried uploaded images but not sure they've worked :/

Gill condition is dependant on so many different things - water quality & temp, genetics, O2 saturation in the water, current, injury etc - that it's hard to say what the issues really are.

I have axies with long fluffy gills and ones with short stub living together too - as long as you are happy with water quality and general conditions and your axies doens't appear distressed I wouldn't worry.

The only thing that might help is to turn off any airstone you have.

Okay auntijude, I'm very confused people keep saying an airstone is good for them to get more oxygen to the water, however people seem to be going back and forth whether the airstone makes gills fluffier or makes them shorter?

It makes sense to me that more oxygen means they don't have to work as hard to get oxygen to their gills, therefor making the gills/gill filaments shorter, is this correct?

And maybe I'm wrong but it seems to me that the actual gill length would be mostly (not totally) due to genetics (as long as there weren't any injuries or anything), whereas the filaments probably have more to do the conditions, is this incorrect?

We don't have an air stone. I never knew about genetics. Will it cause them any long term problems being so short? That's my main concern

As long as it's eating and acting healthy the size of the gills shouldn't matter. Sick axolotls may have a reduction in full size or filaments but that is a more dramatic change.
