Finally found a red-back!!

Here is the small red-back I caught, I put him or her into my tank. The tank is outside in a shady place.

Nice find. Have you identified the gender. Males have mental glands and you can feel the two front teeth. Also they have nasolabial grooves coming down from the nostrils. These features are absent in females.
 
I didn't get a good look at its head, it was very jumpy. I think it may be a female though.
 
Good. The head doesn't quite look like the shape of a males anyway. Males are easier for me to find out here. I guess females spend more time underground.
 
I just found 2 more, a male and a female. I let the smaller one (pictured) go. I hope I can get the 2 to mate.
 
They both escaped, I didn't have a good lid on the tank. I'll fix up the tank and do a search for 2 more tonight.

I'm also gonna go check out some vernal pools later. I'll try to take pics if I find anything.
 
I was looking for spotted salamanders in the vicinity (no luck).
 
If they haven't visited my vernal pools they probably haven't visited yours.
 
On the topic of Spotties, I know they've already spawned in Northern Arkansas from the Snakes of Arkansas forum. It may be that conditions down there in GA prevented them from migrating this year. We just got a great rain that would have gotten them moving last weekend but we've not gotten back out to look yet.
 
Up here in North Carolina this year, most A. maculatum migrated in late January - early Feb. We were doing egg mass counts throughout February.
 
Here in southeast Virginia, the spotted salamanders migrated to and from their breeding areas between Feb. 25 and Mar. 2. Good luck!
