For the last few yews I've been entirely unable to get out, for one reason or another, to some of my favorite spots when the spotted sals come out to play.
Last night was it!!! The wood frogs were out by the hundreds. Everywhere I stepped I sent 1 or 2 hopping. The spring peepers were making there presence loudly known, although I didn' see any of the little guys last night. There were a handfull or so Notos, some of which were obviously gravid. And I was actually able to get a glimpse of a few A. maculatum this year. I take it as an early birthday present that I was finally able to get out and see this again for the first time in years!
Sadly, I was equipped with a dying flashlight, and on a slight time limit due to my sleepy boys who had school today. So I only saw about 3 or 4. But they were big and beautiful, and the 2 that I caught (and released of course) were certainly males. So I'm hoping the dampness holds out into tonight. I'm currently looking for the good flashlights and my camera. Hopefully the ladies will be out as well and I can get some nice pics for all of you!

Sounds like a good night out to me!

Glad to hear you finally got to see the Ambystoma. MA is relatively poor in caudate species diversity, but there are some really nice Ambystoma species and things like Spring Salamanders if you know where and how to look.
