So, i thought male Cynops pyrrhogaster had long fingers, specially during breeding season. One of my males, however, as soon as he started to enter breeding condition, suffered a reduction of the fingers in all 4 limbs. At first sight when i first noticed i panicked thinking fungus, but there was never any sign of infection. The animal looks very healthy, eats very well and is in full breeding mode.
The odd thing is that the fingers were normal before he started to develop. Also, the fingers are irregularly short.
I´m pretty convinced it was not an infection cause there was never any wound, any discoloring, and the shortening stopped some time ago, and still there´s no sign of recovery.
It looks like the reverse of what was supossed to happen....anyone ever seen anything like this?

if you probably know, their are a lot of forms of pyrrhogaster, which look all different to each other.
It also can be the age of the male. An old newt's fingers can really shrink

I've seen newts' toes get shorter, but I have no idea why it happens.

Joostpopei, my C.pyrrhogaster are of the sasayama race, and they are one year old. There´s no apparent reason why the fingers shouldn´t have been lengthening instead of shirnking.

Cheers Jen, knowing that it happens gives me some peace of mind. There really seems to be on indication of illness, so perhaps it´s just a genetic mutation, who knows, anyway the newt is very healthy.
