Fluval v.s. Whisper

Please help me out on this one. I've been wanting an internal filter for a ten gallon tank, but I can't decide on what to buy. I narrowed it down to a Whisper or a Fluval. I would've gotten a Duetto if the supply of those was good.

Does anybody have any experience with these two brands? Which one should I go for?

Lately I've used a lot of the Whisper in tank filters. One draw back is their isn't much room to stuff any extra biomedia in. For most salamanders they are adequate.

Ok I see that the hacker got into this forum as well. hmmm... anyways I've decide to go with the Fluval, but now I can't decide between a Fluval 1-plus and a Fluval 2-plus. I have a ten gallon cage. Would the Fluval 1 not be good enough? Would the Fluval 2 be too much of a filter?

I had the fluval-1 and it created too much current for my newts. It also doesn't have an adjustable output, so you are stuck with whatever current there is (of course you can try using tubing to shift the current to another location). I think the fluval 2 would be too much. I can't comment on the Whisper although I have a duetto and like it (I bought it at Petco; it was the only pet store/aquarium store out of 5 that I went to that had it!)

What did you mean about the supply of Duettos, Tyler? I think you should reconsider the Duetto DJ-50. It has the lowest wattage (=least heat), and is the right size for a 10-gallon newt tank. You can get them online. As Karen points out, one of the drawbacks to a submersible is that some of them are too powerful for newts.

Would I have to pay any extra shipping or would I be to pick up the item at the store with cash? I don't have a checking account nor a credit or debit card.

I think that's the only thing holding me back. I might not be able to afford the internet when I'm going to school in August so I'd like to stay away from having to buy filter pads every ______ weeks (please somebody tell me how often I should change my filter pads) online. Thanks for all of your help this site will always be the most helpful place for new newtists.

I found a Duetto at a local store and it's in my tank right now thanks for your help though.

Tyler, I like the Duetto. I've not had a problem with them yet. The only downside is that they do raise the water temperature a little bit. And the 'carbon basket' is not made to be opened, so you have to buy a new one. Unless you're like me and think that's poopy and cut the top off it so you can just replace the carbon. lol.
