can i get 1 c.o. and 5 NVV to eat out of a food dish? if so how do i go about training.

Hi Wyatt,

I feed all of my newts with their very own, super special, dinner dish. That is, each tank has a small dish in the bottom of their tank (away from the filter system of course). Just put the food in the dish. They will smell the food, and in the beginning will be totally dumbfounded for awhile, but will eventually find their way to the dish and pig out.

It doesn't take too long, and they will know that the plate is a food drop-off. My more brilliant individuals actually wait in the dish and give me the look of, "Hey, when's dinner served? Now, I hope!."

I like to be creative with the dinner plates. Some are ashtrays (fired ceramic) that are shaped like leaves and shells. The colors are natural, and actually add a nice touch to the ambience of the tanks. My favorite places to find these items are GOODWILL, WAL-MART, DOLLAR STORE, they have really neat items, and are CHEAP.

Bottom line, the newts will train themselves!

Yes it will.
I too use food dishes for all my aquatic newts, axolotls, and mudpuppy, and as Pamela says, they soon get used to the food being in one place, and will often sit waiting for food to be dropped in.
It is also much easier to keep an eye on whats been eaten, and to keep the tank bases clean using the feeding dishes.
I use heavy plant pot saucers of various sizes.

Here's an alternative to dishes.
I have in all my tanks a bare bottom. Not the entire tank, but just a part of it. It's easy to clean up leftovers and the newts find the spot very easy. Like Pam said, they'll even wait there for dinner.

Eventually it's up to your personal preferences. But maybe also depending on your newts and their tank. In my cynops tank I need only a small part for the 2 cfbn. But in my pleuro tank, no dish would ever be big enough for my 6 20cm newts. A bare bottom looks like the best solution in this scenario.

Anyway, good luck
Joeri
