Food question

Yeah, that would be ok in an emergency..but why would you think your Axolotls would take that and not a worm? Frozen bloodworms are also an acceptable "backup".

I've been reading over the archives and saw quite a few posts about axxies "losing interest" in worms or other kinds of foods. I just wanted to make sure that I could have an alternative just in case. Yes, I'm going to be a very over-protective axxie Dad. :D

Between bloodworms and earthworms I have never had an Axie lose interest in food. It seems in most cases an Axolotl losing its appetite is due to other factors rather than just becoming "bored" with a certain type of food.

My little fella refuses earthworms of all sizes, other than the first time he was offered one. He will only eat bloodworms now, doesn't always eat frozen but will always eat live ones odd little bugger

Some worms secrete foul smelling/tasting substances and will be rejected by axies. You can try soaking the worm a bit before offering it, which would decrease the smell/taste.

Tried all that he just refuses them, more for the others and he gets bloodworms I guess :D He'll eat tubifex too

I was lucky enough for my LFS to carry live blackworms so I'll have that on hand and I can get frozen bloodworms pretty much anywhere <LFS, Petsmart, Petco, etc...>. Already have a 5 gal tank going with daphs so I *think* that I have all of my food bases covered.

If all else fails they enjoy fingers....

I have a little axie that doesn't want red wrigglers ( Eisenia foetida), he spits them back.
But he will take "regular" earthworms from a garden....(Lombricus terrestris)

I tried soaking the worms, for a few hrs, overnight... didn't help so now he eats reptomin sticks and "regular" earthworms when I can get those....

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
