Foot rot HELP

I have two very sick axolotls one of them has peeling skin and a curved tail and his is in a tea bath like i did for my other one who had done the same thing ages ago anyways both of my axolotls have black on their feet not just their toes and one has white skin and the other as golden skin i might be foot root i will post some pic once i get them but what do i do ?????

I'm unsure whether this is foot rot or just their normal pigmented toes - albinos have black toes when they are sexually mature. I know you said it's their entire foot, not just the toes, but I can only see it on the toes in the photos

The board suggested that the owner clean their tank glass and particularly the bottom (or give their substrate a good rinse) to get rid of any built-up bacteria, which is what the board suggests the axolotls picked up via their feet. The suggested treatment was salt bathing to destroy the bacteria on the feet - a tea bath will also help to keep the bacteria out, but if the bacteria are already in the system a tea bath is essentially stopping the salt from penetrating the wound. The other suggestion was to put Myxazin in the tank - which is a 'broad-spectrum bactericide sold for aquarium fish' - if the rot hasn't gone within a week. I don't know much about this antibiotic so it might be worth asking around to see how effective it is and whether anyone has ever had a problem with it - just being safe.

The other thing I was wondering about was your water parameters, do you know them and could you post them?

What are their water conditions like? Do you have readings for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate..plus what temperature is the water?

Your golden axolotl is rather slim, what do you feed them and how often?

the water condition have been up and down we cant seem to settle the PH and i that is why they skin peeling but i don't know why the feet have started going black the small one has always been little since i got him about 2 months ago i am trying to make him put on some weight but his doesn't eat a lot.

I feed them once a day about three to five pellets a day

My albinos and leucistics have the same thing. It's regular pigmentation (their toes turn black when they mature - just as with dark colored axolotls: their toes turn white).

As long as your water values are fine, and you switch to feeding them earthworms whenever you can instead of only pellets, they should be perfectly fine. The worms stimulate their "hunting" instinct, and with my axies it definitely increased their appetite.

Looking at your other thread confirm my thoughts that you have a water quality issue.

All axies basically need to remain healthy is cool clean water.

Problems usually show up after several weeks if the water is becoming polluted.

Is your filter turned on all the time?
What is your ammonia reading?
What is your nitrite reading?
What is the temperature?
What are you feeding?
How often are you feeding?
Do you remove uneaten food?
Do you do weekly 10 to 15% water changes?
At you removing all visible poop?
Are there any rocks etc in the tank where waste can get trapped?

Your pale one does look a bit poorly to me, perhaps it just needs more food, but I think its worth checking all the above.

What is the temperature? around 18 but can get lower because we are in winter
What are you feeding? axolotl pellets
How often are you feeding? once a day about 5 pellets each
Do you remove uneaten food? i try to but same get such in the rocks

I dont know how to get the younger one (little albino but he was in the tea bath when i took the photo) to eat more i think the older one might get the food before him.


it can't be that the golden one has just reached sexual maturity because it has already had babies about a year ago with another axolotl who sadly passed away.

i am doing a full clean out of the fish tank on the week end and i will be giving both of them tea baths and hand feeding the younger one from now on. i will also be saving up to get aquarium sand as i have been told it is easier to clean than big rocks and not able to be eaten like pebbles

Sounds like you are heading in the right direction.

Just one thing. You really need to test for ammonia. Its not the same thing as pH. Ammonia is the major waste product from your axie, both in its poop and out through its gills. It would be like drinking your own wee. You would get Ill very quickly too!

Please look up cycling on this site to learn about keeping your water safe. . We all had to learn this stuff at some point. Hopefully you can learn it before you get any disasters.

thanks we asked the pet shop of amiona tester ans they gave us Ph telling us it was the same thing i going to buy new stuff the the fish tanks soon. but i have one problem the little on has only eatin one pelltle today and want eat anymore help his is really thin but he isn't eating

U need to get ur water sorted asap! He wont eat when he is stressed. even put him in a tub of dechloronated water. Put the tub in a cool dark place till i sort ur tank out. Much easier to to daily water changes.

Then do ur planned changes and when cycled put them back in..

they his is in a tea bath is just about to have a change they other i have to get a tank from my dad to give her a tea bath which i will have 2moz and i am clean out the tank 2moz and i am going to take out all the rocks in the tank and only have the plants and the hidey places so it is easier to clean

That's good news. I have a large rock in my tropical fish tank which I haven't cleaned underneath in a few weeks, just cleaned around it. I lifted it up today and there was loads of trapped food underneath it which looked like it was growing fungus.

It's amazing how one little pellet can turn the water so foul if it's not picked up. Have you tried feeding earthworms too? Axies love them, they're nutritional and because they're live they obviously don't foul the water quickly if left uneaten. Hope your axies feel better soon :happy:

i am looking around for earth worms today they black on thier feet has started to go away and thier tails aren't curved anymore when clean out the fish tank man was it dirty i feel really bad that i let that happen to by babies but i can nnow learn from my mistakes. the white on is still under wieght going to see if he like earth worms once i get them

Good to hear their little feet are looking better.

If you're looking for sand, you don't need expensive aquarium sand, you can just use play sand which you buy at Bunnings for under $10 a bag (just make sure you wash it very thoroughly before putting into the tank. You can also buy Earthworms in bulk at Bunnings too, I just bought a booster box of 500 for my worm farm today for $30 which will last for ages.

Strongly recommend that you do try to save for a good water testing kit, most of us recommend the API Master Kit (Freshwater) which costs around $60 from aquarium shops or they can be cheaper on sites like eBay or gumtree.

PH at 7.5 is OK are you still having trouble keeping it stable ?

Slightly off topic but I was just wondering if the API test kit is more accurate? Because my flatmate had a Hagen Nutrafin Master Test kit for Freshwater which we were both using. I have just saved up and got an API master test kit and when I did a test for parameters with API my pH came back as 7.4 but with the nutrafin it was 6.8... It's a huge difference. One is a good pH for axy and one is rather low... So which do you think is right?
