Question: For those in Texas...temp problems!

If you use a fan to keep your tank cool with evaporation, and say a quarter of the water in the tank evaporated over the course of 2 weeks, would that make water changes consist of simply filling the tank back up with dechlorinated water? Or would it still be best to do another 25% and then fill back up?

You should ask for a refund on your tertiary education.

Cyn, yes they get a lot of love and care and they are such awesome little things. I have quite a few pets who all receive the very best possible, I definitely am an animal lover. :)
I would never take on an animal unless I was able to give it the very best possible.

Texas and I also use a chiller. They are strongly encouraged for warmer climates.
If you are having issues with your temperature now, it's going to be near impossible for you in a couple months with our notorious heatwaves.

Ok folks, stop the bickering. There has been good discussion on temperatures and ways to manage temps. Keep the discussions civilized and emotions in check please. Personal attacks are not warranted or welcomed on the forum.

I have clip on fans on my tank but I find it is best to do weekly water changes as normal. The fans causing evaporation is not quite the same as a proper water change. Evaporation doesn't remove any debris or axolotl poo and the build up of nitrate becomes more concentrated with less water as it evaporates. I normally spot clean but it is easy to miss some so the weekly water changes allow me to get any that I missed and also stir up the sand a bit as well as ensure nitrate does not get too high.

I also have a car windscreen cover (the foil type) around the outside of the back wall of my tank to insulate the tank a little. It does seem to work a little. It would work better if all sides were insulated but then my view of my axolotls is not so good. But if it is a super hot day I would definitely consider insulating all sides to help cool the tank.
