Axolotls are an enemy to fight in Final Fantasy IX. They only appear (I think) in the marsh on the way from Lindbloom to Gizamaluke's Grotto.

I just ran across them, and it made me a little sad to beat them

Reminds me of the Pokémon, I think there are two that look like axies - Wooper and Mudkip. The first time I saw an axie, it took me back to the hours playing Pokémon card games with my daughter.
