Actually no, the fungus is an opportunistic pathogen and warmer temperatures stress the axolotl reducing its immune response. The fungus is taking advantage of the decreased immune system of the axolotl to infect the axolotl. Its not that it grows better in warm temperatures but that the warm temperatures reduce the axolotl's ability to fight off the infection to the point that it grows better than the axolotl can fight it.
Stipe, with respect to the damage to the second eye, it is possible that the damage was small enough that it took this long to have the infection spread to the point that you could see it. As I said, because you didn't notice it, doesn't mean that it wasn't there.
