Greetings everyone

My female axolotl has a white fungus on her gills, I will try to get pictures if i can. What i have done so far is used a turkey baster (which i have cleaned) and used it to take off the largest fungal masses.. The axolotl was not a fan of this.

I have also done a 50% water change. today, and i was planning on doing another one tomorrow.

I was planning on doing a fridging/salt bath regimen for the axolotl, my plan is this:

Tomorrow morning (tuesday) i do a 25% water change and let the axolotl stay in the tank for the day. Tomorrow after work i will buy some kosher salt (no iodine) and make a strong salt bath solution using one of the articles on this site.

I was then going to put the axolotl in the container at room temperature (with the salt water) and then transfer this container into the fridge for the appropriate amount of time.

Then i was thinking of putting the axolotl in a weaker salt bath solution for more time, and then eventually put the axolotl in plain (dechlorinated) water overnight.

Wednesday morning I will transfer the axolotl to another fresh water container which has been in the fridge overnight, then thursday i will put her in a new container and repeat this on friday also.

does this routine sound good to everyone here? should i do anything differently?

Hi simko,
A few days ago I had the same problem as you and the same looking fungus
the salt baths is a good idea, that seemed to help with my axie
the fridging combined with salt baths shouldn't be entirely necessary
but still good for the healing. and make sure that the salt baths are the same temperature as the water she will go into after them, or at least similar, to try to reduce stress.
Also while shes in a separate container it could be a good idea to a major clean of the main
tank.
btw the routine sounds good to me

Sebguy thabk you for your reply!

I woukd love to do a main tank cleaning. However i now have a cycled tank with fungal spores. Should i clean out everything, including my filter media, and somehow restart the cycle with my axolotl in the fridge?

Not sure what to do with my tank..

What I did was put a lot of salt in the main tank for around 16 hours, more or less
then did a 90% water change and also changed out the filter media.
If you do this make sure you do it asap as you'll need to run your tank for a few days
to get the cycle going again.
Too speed up the process after I cleaned the tank i put in some seachem until she went
back in (Seachem. Stability)
this just made sure that the cycle was good for her to go in again.
Good luck to you and your axie!
and if you have any more questions then feel free to ask

Regards sebguy

Thanks Sebguy

I plan on resealing one edge of my main tank, so while sally (axolotl) is being fridged, I will empty the tank, dry it out and reseal. After fridging I may transfer her to a larger food safe plastic container and keep her there for a bit.

One final question: would treating the newly sealed tank and water with Holtrefeter's
Solution be of any benefit here? Should i consider applying Holtrefeter's
Solution before doing salt baths?

I haven't had much experience with holtrefer's solution
but i don't think it would be necessary however
you can apply the solution if you think its needed.
Good luck with sally!

regards sebguy
