Hey everyone,
I spent a lot of time in the fish hobby but I think it's time for a change. I am very new to keeping amphibians ... Matter of fact I don't even own one yet (Buts that's going to change in time:D). I have been doing a lot of research into a couple of "Beginner"/Hardy newts and also axolotls. I'm really considering either a paddle tail newt, Southern Crested newt, or fire belly newt. Their are a few things I am concerned about such as if a turtle dock will be enough land for one of these creatures? How many how many of one species can keep in a 20 gallon high? Is it possible to keep newts or axolotls with ghost or cherry shrimp even tho they might become prey? I really wanna get some newts since they are semi - aquatic and I've only dealt with fish but another thing I am unsure of is if they are legal in Florida?

Hi Mike.
Great to hear that you are doing your research before getting your new pet. Previous fishkeeping experience will help as you will have previous knowledge of water quality, nitrogen cycle, etc.
I have attached a link to the articles index, so hopefully you should be able to find some information there, just to make a start.

Every state seems to differ as far as taking from the wild. But, I've heard of people keeping ghost and cherry shrimp with the newts and they are peaceful. Newts may eat them, but ghost shrimp cost like 19 cents so no big deal. haha.

Thanks guys,
I've got good and bad news. The good news is newts are legal and I have decided on either a ribbed newt or an axolotl. bad news is actually getting one of these animals is hard. I think i'll just wait for repticon to come in may

Both Ribbed newts and Axolotls are quite popular, and a big state like Florida it shouldn't be tough finding what you are looking for. Take your time, look/ask around. Tropical fish stores sometimes have Axolotls, and they are not on the USFW ban so you could get them shipped to you from someone out of state.

Also remember that eggs are legal to ship for most species as well
