Fuzzy tip

hey one of my juvy verrucosus decided that a tankmates tail looked enough like food to try to eat it. The victim had the very tip (about 2mm of it) bitten off and over night it went fuzzy. I treated it by removing the fungus and dabbing on 'protozin' fish fungus medicine from water life. How can I make sure she heals.

Keep it in clean water (change it daily with dechlorinated water if necessary) and carry on the Protozin treatment as necessary. Remove the animal from the water, gently restrain it on a smooth surface with a piece of damp foam and gently dab the medication on the affected area with a cotton bud, then return it to the tank. Don't just dump the medication in the tank. Feed it sparing with nutritious food but don't overfeed. You're doing all you can Chris

Hi Chris,

treatment was perfect. Just put the tip regularily in the anti-fungal medicine until it is healed. If possible even a temporaly terrestric homing would speed up the healing.

Well, though I respect Alan's and Uwe's approach, I believe it to be unnecessary. If the animal is healthy and eating well still then simply adding about half a teaspoon or at most a teaspoon of Sodium Chloride/ table salt per litre of water should give the fungus a hard enough time that the animal's tail should get past the initial vulerable stage. It shouldn't be open to fungal infection after a few days anyhow, so you shouldn't need to keep the protozin treatment up (and indeed I would hazard a guess to say that it might not be helpful to regeneration).

I should have made it clear that I wouldn't repeat such treatment more than 2-3 times over an interval of 2-3 weeks. If a superficial injury doesn't heal after that, it's a sign that the animal has other underlying problems.
And while I respect Uwe's view, I wouldn't force an aquatic phase caudate to become terrestrial unless you have to!

Thanks everyone. After two dips and a careful removal of fuzz, the wound is healing well.
