FREE PRESS (Suffolk, UK) 17 January 08 Good day for newts
An environmental group has been working to improve the habitat for a protected species of newt.
Members of the Woodland Biodiversity Around Towns Scheme (BATS) have been removing silt from a Chilton pond to help boost a small colony of great crested newts.
Volunteers were joined by workmen from Joe Wiles Contractors, who helped deepen the pool, off Waldingfield Road, and remove overgrown vegetation free of charge.
BATS chairman Peter Clifford said: "We have to undertake this work now as there is only a small window of opportunity to remove silt from the pond while the newts are out of the water and hibernating in vegetation nearby. By next month they will be starting to return."
