HARROW TIMES (UK) 13 April 08 Have you got newts for us (Manisha Mistry)
Residents are being asked to look out for a rare species of amphibian that could be making a home in their gardens or ponds.
Harrow Council has issued a great crested newt alert after environmental staff found a large number were living in ponds in the neighbouring borough of Hillingdon.
They are asking anyone who spots one to get in touch.
Officers suspect the newts may be living in the borough due to the large number of ponds and open spaces.
The great crested newt is protected by European law and planning applications infringing their habitats are often turned down.
Great crested newts have rough skin, orange or yellow bellies, with black blotches and the male species have silver stripes near the back of the tail.
Anyone who spots the one can call Anna Cohen at the council on 0207 736 6080.
