WARRINGTON GUARDIAN (UK) 10 March 08 Haven for the newts (Ian Ross)
United Utilities is to create a haven for great crested newts as part of improvements at Brookhouse Green.
The company is to build a small wastewater treatment works below ground, with two kiosks above ground in the field opposite 6 Moss Mere.
The scheme is aimed at improving the local sewage system, and is needed to comply with European standards.
The work will reduce the level of wastewater discharge entering nearby Arclid Brook.
Work is due to start in May, and should take six months to complete.
"United Utilities engineers have worked alongside an ecologist to modify their management plans to accommodate local wildlife, such as great crested newts," said project co-ordinator Matthew Steer.
"Gullies have been moved away on site, and the area will be largely grassed as part of the landscaping scheme.
"We hope our landscaping work will create a haven for the newts and encourage their populace."
Mr Steer said there would be no odour or noise problems from the works, as the treatment works process units would be covered, and the kiosks were soundproof.
"United Utilities also has in place a full landscaping scheme, which will further minimise any visual impact caused by the treatment works after it has been built," he said.
"We are keen to let everyone know what to expect of this work because when it is finished it will bring environmental improvements to the area."
The improvements are part of United Utilities' £2.9 billion water quality and environmental improvement programme between 2005 and 2010.
