Paperboy Comment; somebody once told me - though London is the historical and government centre of the United Kingdom; that Birmingham is the social and intellectual centre of the country. Perhaps we could all agree to gather at The Newt for a cold one -sorry, forgot it's the UK - for a tepid one?

BIRMINGHAM MAIL (UK) 15 April 08 Mice spotted in The Newt pub in Birmingham (Paul Bradley)
A city centre pub has become the latest Birmingham venue to close its doors after rodents were discovered on its premises.
The Newt, in Stephenson Street, was shut down by environmental health officers when they found "mouse activity" in a random spot check earlier this month.
An emergency closure was immediately granted by Birmingham magistrates when an application was made by Birmingham City Council to close the pub, which is owned by Wolverhampton brewers Marstons PLC.
The application said the pub "posed an imminent risk of injury to health because of mouse activity within the premises".
It was closed for four days earlier this month.
A Birmingham City Council spokeswoman said: "On April 1 a member of the public phoned up and complained they had seen mice in The Newt.
"We issued an emergency closure order on April 3 that was ratified in court. The company were then given a cleaning schedule which was completed and they reopened their doors on April 7."
A spokeswoman for Marstons Plc said: "We are pleased that The Newt has reopened having been given a clean bill of health by Birmingham City Council."

One look at the "newt and cucumber" should confirm that Birmingham is not the intellectual and social centre of the UK, mice or no mice.

This has got to be the best caudata themed pub in the UK: The Salamander, Bath. Not only is it named after one of my favorite animals but it also sells Bath Ales which means you can always get a great pint :lick:.

There is also a pub called "The fox and newt" in Leeds.
