YORKSHIRE POST (Leeds, UK) 11 March 08 New homes for newts
Two colonies of protected great crested newts in West Yorkshire are to be given new homes.
Ecology experts are planning three new ponds at Thorpe Park business park, in east Leeds, which will provide improved habitats and breeding sites for the species.
For the past three years, the existing ponds that support the two colonies have been drying out.
The creation of the new ponds is being carried out now, but the newts will not be moved until 12 months after the work is finished. This will allow the new ponds to be colonised by insects and plants vital for the support of the newts.
Once the newts are moved, they will be enclosed in their new habitat by a fence which will prevent them from returning to their original sites.
Ecology experts will continue to monitor the colonies at Thorpe Park, at Junction 46 of the M1, near Garforth.
The associate director of Thorpe Park Developments Ltd, Andrew Crowther, said: "We are absolutely committed to maintaining and improving the environment around the park."
