BBC (London, UK) 03 March 08 New ponds for protected species
New ponds are being dug in a wood to provide habitats for rare amphibians.
The Environment Agency and Forestry Commission hope great crested newts will migrate and breed in the ponds in Eastridge Wood, Shropshire.
Over the past 50 years, there has been a big decline in the protected species partly due to a loss of habitat.
The creatures live in fishless ponds where there are lots of weeds. Rangers want the small population of newts already living in the wood to expand.
