I am trying to do some simple genetic mapping of my axolotls and want to make sure that this is correct information :
For an axolotl to have the phenotype of a color it has to be homozygous.
Like for axolotyl to be a melanoid it has to be homozygous for the melenoid gene?

Is albino a dominate or recessive trait? What about axanthix?

For an axolotl for the offspring to be homozygous for a trait both parents have to carry the gene. Hetrozygous only one parent carries the gene but could produce a homozygous offspring if the other parent carries the same gene?

I have already read the genetics page and other genetic documents online about axolotyls. I do realize that some genetics can only be determined through testing and can not be determined by phenotype.

Melanoid, leucistic, albino, axanthic and copper are all recessive traits.

And yes, 2 axies that are wildtypes but are heterozygous for albino will produce some albino babies, about 1/4 of the total.

If you cross an albino (homozygous a/a) with a wildtype (homozygous A/A) all the offspring will carry an albino gene but will be wildtype - heterozygous (A/a).

You can also work backwards and determine the parents' genotypes from the phenotypes of the babies.
