Hi all,
I have two females and a male all of breeding age.
My male is a GFP leucistic.
Can the GFP gene pass to the next generation through the male line?
I know certain traits in other animals only pass through the female etc.
If they ever breed will it be possible that any of them are GFP?
Don't know if this helps but my females are a golden albino and a black melanoid.
Thank you,
Ariel

Yes. GFP is a dominant single gene, axies either have it or they don't, if they have it they show the GFP characteristics.

50% of the offspring of a GFP animal will be GFP, rising to 75%+ if both parents have it.

Thank you! I try to read all of the genetics posts but it's hard for me to understand XD
It's very good to know :)

What do you base that on? My guess would be if both parents are gfp all of the offspring would be gfp and their are varying degrees of gfp. GFP is a little more complicated than most other inheritable traits in axolotls. I've bred a lot but am not sure I have a complete understanding of the gfp trait.

What do you base that on?

Just basic inheritance patterns - although both parents have the gene they may not pass it on to all offspring. Since GFP is a dominant gene an animal only needs a gene from one parent to express it, but may carry one or two genes. If they have 2 genes then 100% of the offspring will be GFP, if it carries 1 then 50% will be. If both parent carry 1 gene then 50% of the offspring will carry 1 gene, 25% will have 2 genes, and 25% will have none.

It's effectively the opposite pattern to recessive genes.

Here's something interesting to think about though. My female axolotls are sisters from the same clutch, both are albino and one is GFP. Both parents were non GFP but one or more grandparents were (on the mother's side). How does that happen if GFP is dominant?

STCxB I had something similar happen. I had gfp show up from a breeding where I thought neither parent was gfp. One of the parents was a gold albino. When I closely examined the gold parent it had a very fine netting pattern of gfp. Gfp is not always expressed the same in all carriers.

Wow! I can't wait to see if they'll breed and have these cool characteristics. I didn't even think melanoids could be GFP XD maybe I'll have some melanoids gfps?
