So about a week and a half ago I had a water temp issue and my axie Kirby got hit pretty hard by it. The lovely people over on the sick axolotl sub helped me a lot, and I've managed to keep the water below 20C consistently since getting a fan!

However, when the water turned too hot, Kirby's gill feathers shriveled up completely and now she's left with nothing but 6 stubby branches. I was wondering if the fluff is ever going to grow back?

Here's pictures of before, during, and after the water incident. I was told there wasn't a fungus issue, but I'm suspecting there might be...

Thanks a lot for responses in advance! <3

Bumping this up as I'm interested in "normal" dynamics of gill regrowth also. I got anaxolotl from someone who's bought her from a pet shop that didn't provide adequate care, probably kept her with fish, etc.

Hope your little guy pulls through, OP!

The gills will grow back, but in the meantime you should make sure that the water level is not too high, so he can easily go breathe at the surface.

Is Kirby a dwarf?

My little dude was at a similar (or slightly smaller) size when I rescued him from a pet store that was treating him poorly, and he had very, very short gills (possibly because of tankmates, temperature, no food, etc). With very very regular water changes, I was seeing improvement in about five days, though I thought I was imagining it because I wanted him to get better so much. They were healthy looking in about... two or three weeks, and pretty much bushy in a month. I keep his temperature around 65 degrees and all the parameters as low as possible. I'll try to piece together a timeline of some photos... he started around 5cm or a little smaller and pushed past 10cm about a month after I got him. He's also a bit of a chubblet.

First picture is from April 22

Next is from May 2 (10 days later)

Then May 12 (20 days later)

Then May 22 (30 days later)

And yesterday, May 26 (34 days later)

Your lotl may vary, but that's what I've seen at least. Hope that helps!
