Gold Axolotl at Petshop in bad conditon

Thank you Cynthia

I will email the colony right now to see what would be good to use to get rid of Anchor worms and I will also ask about Dimilin.

Dimilin is a tradename for diflubenzuron, a pesticide. It works by inhibiting the production of chitin, the component of the exoskeleton of insects, etc.--if they can't produce that substance, they can't grow, so they die. If I remember correctly, it's an extremely safe chemical, often used outdoors to combat insects due to its non-effect on the ecosystem.

It should be safe for axolotls. Search on dimilin on the forums and you'll see a couple others who contemplated its usage.

Let us know if you hear back from the colony about it. It's very effective against the kind of parasite you've been discussing--one of the best (most effective) chemicals against them.

I'm sure there is some information online about it if you search (you might have better luck searching by the chemical name), but I'm pretty sure everything you'll run into will say it's more or less safe--chitin production isn't done in axolotls, so inhibiting it doesn't have an effect. It's non-mutagenic/non-carcinogenic as well, I think.

Thank you very much for that information, Gregory

I haven't heard back from the Colony as of yet. I will give it a day or two, I am sure they probably have many emails to answer

As for Dimilin, I think I will give it a try. I'll try to do a search on the Forum about Dimilin and also a search on Yahoo and Google.

So this is a product I can pick up at Petsmart or any other pet store? I will enquire about it tomorrow I have to stop in anyway.

I do hope to get the problem resolved soon.

Thank you again

I'll make sure to post once I hear from the Colony too.

Sure, Rheann, I hope the information helps. It should be sold at Petsmart, etc. It might be sold with a different name, but look at the ingredients for either dimilin or diflubenzuron. Just keep it away from any insect that you want to survive past the larva stage.

I hope it turns out well--parasites give me the creeps, much moreso than things like fungus, etc.

I got some feed back from the colony. Here is what they sent to me:

I am not sure of Dimilin - we have never used it on our axolotls. We have used a different medicine for external parasites called Clout. Its dosage is one tablet per 10 gallons of water. I would recommend this first, since we know it doesn't harm them right away. If in the Clout water for more than 2-3 days their gills can become damaged and they may bleed from the gills, but once in fresh medicine-free water they heal themselves (their gills) very fast.

Good Luck!

I haven't purchased the Dimilin yet. I think I will try the Clout. I have a 10 gallon aquarium that I'll move him into just to medicate him with the clout. I'll try and get out today to get some. My husband is sick right now, so tomorrow might look better to get the Medication.

Also, this is medication that can be picked up at Petsmart? Anyone know for sure?

The clout is what i would go with. I don't know if its at petsmart.

Be very careful with Clout--it's a very nasty chemical. Dimilin and Clout are organo-phosphates/enes respectively, I think. Clout can kill amphibians after a few days, but it should be all right as long as you keep a watchful eye on the poor little guy.

If you use either, if possible do it in a separate tank, and observe carefully. (I'm sure you do, based on things like your artwork.

)

You should be able to find either at Petsmart; I'm pretty sure I've seen bottles of Clout there.

Im sure that if the colony used Clout, and they know what they're doing, that its alright. It may be deadly like you say but i would still go with it, because its for the best, if it gets rid of the problem.

Rheann, if you get exact procedures from the colony on how to use this medication, be sure to post them, and perhaps talk to Ed K. and Jennifer Macke about adding it to the list of medications.

Hey Guys,

My internet connection isn't working too well right now. I can't access my email. I have been having problems with it since last night.

When it works again I'll email the colony again and ask them what the exact procedure is for Clout and then I will make sure to ask Ed and Jennifer if they can add it to the list, it would be very helpful

Ok, I got my email to work. this is what the Colony wrote:

The directions are on the package - one tablet per 10 gallon of water, and then a water exchange with a new tablet. The medicine in the tablet breaks down after 24 hours, from what I understand from the package. So we would just make new water (40 gallons) with new tablets (4 tablets for 40 gallons) every day and we did this three days in a row. It can be sensitive to their gills....once you notice any damage to the gills or blood in the water discontinue use. But the anchor worms should be off by then too, hopefully.

I'll get some Clout A.S.A.P I'll also Contact Ed and ask him to post this info in the sick section of the site.

well i hope it clears up the anchor worms before the blood or his gills are damaged.
